- Jade mountain (Yu -Shan) has the largest mass of any mountain in South East Asia .

Vango - I SAID 'LARGEST' NOT 'HIGHEST' - YU-SHAN HAS THE LARGEST MASS OF ANY MOUNTAIN IN S.E.ASIA. Obviously didn't read my answer - never mind.

- The Southern most tip of the island is in the Tropic of Cancer and gets hot weather all year around (where as the rest of the island gets 3 seasons worth of hot weather and one season a bit milder - not really winter).

- You get an interesting mix of Chinese, Japanese and Western culture.

- Taipei never sleeps, the night-markets close at about 2 - 3am, then the day markets open an hour or two later. There are 7-11's on every corner which are open 24hrs and you can even go shopping at a supermarket any time of day and night. There's even 24hr book stores - people really go there and just read books from cover to cover!

- Taiwan 'still' has the tallest building in the world - Taipei 101.

- Many many beautiful national parks - too many!

- Apparently, Ilan (NE of Taiwan) has one of the 'only 2' cold water springs in the world. It's not really cold but when you compare it with the others it's a bit cooler. Taiwan has dozens of hot-springs!

Is that enough? I know the girl before me listed more so I'm just going to leave it there.

According to the pronouncements of many people (including many persons trained in the legal profession), the ROC on Taiwan fully meets the international law criteria for statehood.

Those criteria include: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states.

In fact however, the ROC on Taiwan has neither a permanent population nor its own territory. This is because there is no legal basis under international law or under ROC law --
(1) to consider native Taiwanese persons as ROC citizens, (2) to consider that the territorial sovereignty of Taiwan belongs to the ROC!

As we know, the ROC on Taiwan applies to join the United Nations every year, and is always refused. Why is this? The answer is simple: the ROC on Taiwan is not a sovereign nation.

The National Art museum has the biggest collection of Chinese artifacts in the world - much bigger than anything in China.
Green island (to the southeast) has hot springs running into the sea - a rare phenomenon.
Yu shan (Jade mountain) is not the highest in SE Asia as DR stated (Kinabalu in Borneo is higher). Nonetheless, for such a small island, Taiwan has an exceptional amount of high mountains - more than 100 over 3000m.
Second most densely populated country in the world (next to Sri Lanka)

One thing I find quite shocking is that there are very few rubbish bins you could find at public places and/or along the streets. Most of the time I need to bring the rubbish home and only get rid of them when the rubbish truck comes (sometimes I miss the truck and have to keep the rubbish for another day). Interesting... huh? more of like "inconvenient" :(
