Have you got the latest version of iTunes?

Open itunes yourself, then put the cd into the drive. Once the cd is in, itunes will automatically start to import the songs. An icon will show up on the left hand side that looks like a cd. (Just like the ipod icon shows up when your ipod is plugged in.) At the top, each song up come up as it's being imported. Also, the song list from the cd will be displayed in the main part of your screen. As each song is being imported a little orange circle will show up next to the song until it's done.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to do some research on-line regarding itunes/ipod. I've got the same ipod you have. When I first tried to do stuff with it I had a bunch of problems. I ended up getting a lot of very useful information off of message boards that were set up for users of ipod's that were having problems. There are tons of message boards out there. Unfortunately going to apple's website won't do you much good unless you're willing to pay for it. My problem ended up being something with having Norton. Just get on some of the message boards and look to see if anyone has had the same problems and see if any of the answers help. If there haven't been anyone listing the problems you have then post it yourself. You'll probably need to list everything necessary regarding your computer and the ipod because you'll end up getting asked by someone anyway. Plus, it'll help sift through tips that may not work for the kind of system you have.

Hope this helps!

thats weird. you should just be able to rip cd's onto your itunes than put them onto your ipod...

try clicking file > import (files) and try to pull down the bar and look for your cd on your computer. theres no reason it shouldnt work...
