Sorry to bother you all with this again, but I was advised to avoid Freelanders and had decided to do so. However, my neighbour, who has a diesal Freelander told me she was advised to avoid just the petrol ones. Are diesal ones more reliable or would the same folk still advise me to avoid like the plague?

An acquaintance had one. It spent 7 of its first 12 months in the dealer's workshop being "fixed". Its transmission exploded at speed, locking all the wheels and almost rolling over. He SUED the dealer for selling goods of unmerchantable quality. The manufacturer took over the case after a while and eventually settled out of court, the day before the case came to trial to keep the matter away from media attention. There are probably worse cars but most of those are Ferraris. From what I hear elsewhere it does not matter whether it is petrol or diesel, the problems are with the engine and everywhere else. You could not pay me to take one.

The diesel engine had a problem where the bolt holding the timing chain sprocket managed to fall-out and destroy the engine in the process.

The advice has to remain the same, avoid Land Rover like the plague. Vehicles are a lot more than just petrol or diesel engines, and there is so much else that can, and does, go wrong on a Freelander, or any Land Rover.

Buy Japanese, anything else is less..... a lot less.

If you are dead set on a Freelander then go for the Turbo Diesel option as they are economical, powerful and have oodles more torque than the petrol ones. If you are looking for a true off roader then there are reasons that it may not be the best choice but if you like the looks and the general spec of the Freelander then it makes a fair road car with moderate off road capabilities.

The petrol engine (rover k series) had a serious problem with blowing head gaskets, and the deisel engine is no doubt better by Landrovers stilll come bottom of reliability ratings for cars sold in the UK. Sadly if you want a reliable car in this segment (Softroader), buy Toyota or Honda.

I am sure the DIESAL ones are excellent my dear, but I must tell you that I have a DIESEL one and they are very good too.

I hope this answer has been helpful to you.
