There are many varieties of "crackers"...animal crackers are the sweet ones...cookies are a bit more sweet, pretty and fancy. Really, I think it's a Euro thing.

That has always bugged me too. (I've kind of imagined that maybe when someone first made something in the shapes of animals maybe they were more cracker-like - but, like everything else -evolved!! But that's just something I've imagined. Don't consider it a for-real answer.)
We wouldn't like them as well if they were crackers, though, so we need to accept the wild-and-wacky reality of this enigmatic snack and be happy with them.
