You are very mistaken.
France has always had a few of the finest footballers in the whole of Europe. It is just that Zidane is the most famous.
1)Michel Platini- Magical Midfielder. A deft touch of his foot can make wonderful goals. One of the greatest playmakers the world has ever seen. He was also a good passer and a goalscorer. He was voted the 7th best footballler of the 20th century, He is also the only person to get the European footballer of the year thrice. He led France to the European Championships. He has played 72 matches and scored a whopping 41 goals(national record). He has also played remarkably well for Juventus.
2)Theirry Henry-The best French striker ever. He's played 91 matches for France and got 39 goals. He is regarded as the best arsenal player of all time and is the club's leading goslscorer. Henry is third in the list of EPL goalscorers and i strongly believe sooner or later he is gonna be the #1 goalscorer. He's won the French player of the year 4 times.
3)Eric Cantona- He hasn't played remarkable well for France but was probably the BEST plaer of Manchester United. He's led them to 4 titles. He's played 144 matches for France and has scored 64 goals.
Now, these may be the more prominent players but we must also not forget such unsung heroes like Just fontaine, Marcel Desailly, Louis Saha, Patrick Viera, William Gallas, Lilian Thuram, David Trezeguet, Didier Deschamps, Fabian Barthez, Louis Fernandez etc.
The french team throughout history has represented multi-culturalism in a way no other team has. All the players have worked together harmoniously and always stuck up for each other. france is a great team and the future will be safe in the hands of Franc Ribery(a future legend no doubt), Gregory Coupet(if he puts in a lil more effort he can be great) and Theirry Henry(on his way to be remembered as one of the finest strikers to have walked the earth)

What proof is needed? Great players have nothing to prove.

The French have many footballing legends. For example, Fabien Barthez won the Lev Yashin award in 1998 FIFA world cup, and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for a very long time!

Just Fontaine was better than Zidane. In the 1958 FIFA World Cup he scored 13 goals in just six matches.
