I was looking at the Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router. Basically, from what I understand with Windows Internet Version 7, it is better to have a router (or hardware firewall) than to depend on Norton's Antivirus and Firewall? Any suggestions? Is an upgrade to Norton's 2007 version good enough? What is bricking a router?

Consumer grade hardware routers I wouldn't really suggest, it may have the tendency to block things that you do not want blocked. Software firewalls I would suggest / recommend.

One thing to note is that a "Router" is not a "Firewall". A router's function is to route (split, connect, cross networks) and a Firewall's job is to control data, in and out flow. There are some routers that has firewalls built in, but I would suggest the software route.

In regards to Norton 2007, change out of it. Unless you have a super fast computer, Norton 2007 software can slow your computer to s*#@. You may want to try CA Associate's Internet Security Suite. www.ca.com or else you can find it at Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City, etc.

Bricking a router is like securing it. A router can act like a firewall if you manually control what comes in and out. It's still not a firewall, but can act very similar depending on the manual programming.
"fireWALL", imagine bricking as building a wall. So "Bricking a router" is securing or making the router like a firewall.

This doesn't go too deep in detail because I you may fall asleep reading it, but that's the basic part of it.

Hope this helps,

-Smopy.

hi, we've tried thousands of the buggers but end up with AVG freeware as being the best anti-virus thing going. Completely reliable and more importantly, free. I would advise a go with it before you go messing about with a router, you probably won't need one.
