Most likely out of tradition. When you grow up and watch your favorite sports heros win a tournament, you see them kiss their trophy or bite their gold medal. So, you mentally associate winning a trophy with those images.
Originally, people would bite their gold medals to ensure that it was actually made of gold. Gold is a soft metal and your teeth will make an impression when you bite down. Just in case you wanted some background...
