Universal joints hold the drive shaft,if the universal joints fell out then you would eventually lose the drive shaft.the universal joints keep it in place as the transmission shift the car in gear causing the shaft to push to rear axle making it to go.Something to that effect.

THE "PIPE" IS THE DRIVESHAFT. THE TRUCK WON'T MOVE WITHOUT IT. (UNLESS A 4x4 IN FRONT-DRIVE) THE UNIVERSAL JOINTS ARE BEARING ASSEMBLIES THAT LET THE PIPE ROTATE AT ANGLES AS NEEDED, DUE TO DESIGN AND "FLOATING" ACTION OF REAR AXEL OVER THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD. WHEN IT FELL OUT, THE RANSMISSION MAY HAVE LOST OIL. THIS WOULD BE EVIDENCED BY A SMALLER, PIPE-LIKE SPLINED (TOOTHED) ATTACHMENT PULLING OUT FROM THE TRANSMISSION WHEN IT FELL OFF THE VEHICLE.

the long pipe is the driveshaft, the part that broke is the universal joint (u-joint).
