I know they usually can't understand me, but I hate simplifying things for kids.

No, you are not. I do the same thing. Kids understand way more than we give them credit for. I've talked to my kids that way since they were babies and they are both very articulate and have huge vocabs for their ages. I refuse to talk down to a kid and I hate hearing people who do. It makes me think of the way someone would talk to their pet. Kids are people and we should treat them that way.

When I started having kids I told my family not to talk to them in baby talk. My family is not like this but siblings b/f, wifes might have been and I wanted it to be out in the open before I would say something to them and embarrass them.
Talk to a child in baby talk you will have a child that talks in baby talk. Big pet peeve on mine!
I do not like my boys cursing, while I am around they do not do this. Without "bugging" them though I do not know if they do this when I am not around.
People under estimate kids....You are doing nothing wrong. Kids respect elders who do not talk to them as if they are stupid.
My boys have always had very good vocabularies, I feel this is due to talking to them as if they are people.

Same boat. As a kid, nothing was more offensive than being patronized. I told myself at the time that I would never make a kid feel that way and I have held true to that.
