radiation, world war III, overheating of the sun- depletion of the ozone, global warming, gigantic meteor, the big bang
most likely depletion of the ozone if we don't do anything about the use to gasoline and pollution. -about 50 more years.

Lots of answers already but here's a thought. If mankind doesn't die out sometime soon (and you might say that that's pretty likely given the way things are going - but let's just imagine that we get through the various crises that unfold around us) then we ought to have technological capabilities in the future that far exceed what we have today. Look at technological progress over the last century - now carry that forward a century, a thousand years, a million years etc etc. If we don't achieve the ability to move our own planet into a safer orbit around this star when it becomes a red giant or even move it into orbit around another star then I'd be surprised.
Of course by this stage we'd have either evolved or else engineered ourselves into something quite different from humans - and it's also possible that if we had already died out as a species then another species which came after us would take on this challenge instead. The eventual fate of the Earth and indeed the whole universe might conceivably be in the hands of intelligent lifeforms - a curious thought but one with some serious theory behind it.

We're about half way through the evolution of our planet, so roughly about 5 billion years left to go before the Sun expands and becomes a Red Giant. Whether or not we'd be swallowed up is currenlty debated - we may for example move to a wider orbit with time as the Sun loses mass by radiation and therefore have a weaker gravitational pull - whatever, the Sun turning into a Red Giant will probably not be a good scenario for life on earth if not the entire planet as we know it. Humans will have long been replaced by then anyway (hopefully) so I wouldn't worry too much.

"Nothing lasts forever." I think just about everyone would agree with that. Whether it's a mountain, a mole-hill, a distant star or the Twinky That's a toughie for a lot of people. On the one hand, according to science, our planet has a good five billion years before the warrantee on our sun runs out. At which point, it will expand to a Red Giant, engulfing Earth and the other inner planets and become far more cost-effective to replace than repair. Especially when one considers that the entire Universe only has a scant ohh, fifteen, sixteen trillion years to expand beyond all conceivable reason before it runs out of steam and starts collapsing back in on itself. Much like the current US economy.
Science also has shown us that the formation of the Universe was a messy business that left quite a bit of litter behind in the form of giant ice balls and big, nasty rocks; many of which have the unfortunate habit of crashing into our planet uninvited and at highly inconvenient times. A fact the dinosaurs know about only too well... or would have, if there were any still alive... and had brains larger than a throat lozenge... which they're not and they didn't... so, forget I even brought it up. Anyway, the point is, however long our planet has, we as a species might get dusted as early as tomorrow afternoon - somewhere around tea time - should a large enough chunk of space litter choose that moment to come barging rudely into our atmosphere.

Right now the sun is burning hydrogen. in the distant future the sun will run out of hydrogen and switch to burning helium. At that point the diameter of the sun will start to expand and become a RED GIANT. Unfortunately for planet Earth our orbit will be with in this larger diameter. The earth will be consumed by the sun long before it burns out

if ur not religious and the science answer is the one u want then its good news, they estimate that it will be 5billion years in the future when the sun dies of old age (and lets face it, at 10billion years it will be very old) and then it will swell up and swallow the earth with the rest of the solar system and then shrink to its death (i think it becomes something like a white dwarf when it shrinks but i cant remember for sure and i cant b bothered to look). its not likely the earth will get destroyed properly before that unless lots and lots of nukes go off simultaneously, which i very much doubt :)

not sure...as far as the exact ENDING, but it will defiantely cease in some major fashion, perhaps it will cease as we know it...or a new world will be born to take over..
..but most of the ancient people...who are mostly spot on with things
-tho metaphorical at times, such as the myans-they said dec 21, 2012...
..however certain groups and peoples and governments (all the same-really, crafty buggers-u kno who u r) they changed the calendar so many times we don't know the relative year, lunar/solar/Gregorian calendars etc
better to work it out backwards and compare to the main opinion of the current Mayan date.
may i ask why u ask?-MSG me on my space- www.myspace.com/severedfate
thanks and i hope i helped

The earth will probably still be a massive body in a billion years, but of course humans will be gone and long forgotten.
