To be honest, I don't mind the old rap, like the 1979-early 1980's rap. That rap didn't have explicit lyrics and didn't mention degradation of women. I have to argue that rap isn't 100% negative. Some types of rap are negative, and that's purely why I don't listen to it. I cringe whenever I hear a rap song because I don't see the point of listening to an angry guy (or anyone for that matter) talking to computer generated music (or bass-boosted badly recorded hip-hop music).

However, I haven't answered your question yet. Why is rap music negative? Rap music is negative because the people who rap those "songs" are probably angry or had a childhood that exposed them to a lot of things like sex, violence, and women degradation. That's my opinion, but I agree. Rap is negative, violent, and I feel it should be banned, regardless that it's the "in" thing nowadays.

Well I listen to country music, but I don't think any music is 100% negative but some music is portrayed as bad because the general theme of it. In country music there is a lot of songs about love, life, God, and family. Rap music tends to seem more violent and the fast paced beat doesn't seem to help the generalization of it. There are a few country songs talking about shooting some1 or something but thats not part of the general theme of the music.

I don't think it's 100%, but there is a great deal that is negative. It really sucks, I grew up on the good sounding rap of the '90's and what I've heard on the radio now is encouraging children to do drugs, drink, hit women, and be promiscuous. It's kinda disturbing. Incidently though, I AM 420 friendly. :)

I remember the same thing being said about rock - that it was rebellious & had no redeeming qualities.

While rap appears on the surface to be harsh, vulgar and negative, there are some strong social/political messages & opinons coming thru. That is what needs to be listened to and understood.

Try listening to www.myspace.com/jurassic5
these guys are really positive, and they do rap. Work it Out is a great happy song.
But I do agree, a lot of rap music is so negative and it's affecting people in a bad way..

I agree with the first guy you are the negative one. will smith is a positive rapper, and you would know that if you really listened to rap instead of judging it.

Its alot easier being bad than being good, so when a rapper says he driving to mississippi with stolen car new paintjob evaiding cops we (as consumers) transition ourselves to be placed inside this situation and say "hey i wish i could do that" When a rapper says he gets jumped by 4 guys and trys to stand his ground, chances are slim at best that he didnt do it. Unfortunatly it sells. Consider the 'Model" syndrom, almost all models are perfect in every shape and size b/c its what we want to see....not every one wants to see it but those that do want to either be that person or similar.
