They're good. It's harmless fun, you get to use your imagination, it's a nice time with friends...I used to work as a tutor for middle-school kids who still struggled with basics and we played the Star Wars d20--it was amazing how fast they managed to grasp simple math concepts they'd missed since second grade once it was put in a fun context! I love them and regret that I rarely get to play anymore...

Here's the thing. You go out for a picnic with families. You talk you laugh. And it's fun.
Table Top [not just role playing, card games or others like Tamiya car races] are just about the same thing. It's get together. Main point is, you have fun with your friends.
It's not a matter of good or bad, rather, how a person take it to the extreme. Sure, no harm done when you play a D&D for a couple of hours. But what happens when someone gets obsessed with it and take it to the next level?
For example; skipping meals and slept, over spending money for supplies.
So who is to blame? The board game or the person himself?
We have to be open minded with situation like these. The game did not meant for us to skip meals or sleeps, but yet they did tell us to create our own dungeons!
But you have to remember, we are just humans anyway. No one is perfect.

I think they're good. They can promote get-together among friends and family. It can also teaches you how to play in a more traditional way, dice and pencils and notes and all. And you won't be stuck in front of the pc 24/7. I think RPG table top format is a good thing indeed. I mean that's how we all used to play it before video games came along.

RPGs can be fun, exciting, creative and stimulating in all kinds of good ways.
Only thing to be watchful about is taking this mind-gaming off the table-top and hauling it around with you into your non-gaming life. Or neglecting the real fun, excitement and adventure of living for the little world of RPGs.
All a question of keeping it in perspective.

They're a social recreational activity; they're not bad unless the group is incapable of telling fantasy apart from reality.
