Before you leave home, visit your bank to check that your ATM card is configured for International withdrawals. Make sure you have a numerical pin code. You can use your ATM card over there. You'll save a ton of cash on exchange rates. Banks give you the current exchange rate without the hassle of standing in line at a change counter that is going to rip you off.

Have fun in Portugal!

Just take a few with you my dear, you don't want to carry around too much cash, do you? If you order them from your local post office a few days in advance you will find it is the cheapest way. Also most cash machines in Portugal are Multi lingual.

Look for ‘mutibanco’ cashpoint machines. There are lots of these in towns and they accept cards with the visa symbol.

I pay a v. small fee when I withdraw money. Very convenient and no hassle.

If you intend to use a credit card phone the credit card company first and let them know you are going to make purchases abroad.

On one occasion my credit card was ‘disabled’... as a security measure! Very inconvenient. Now I always let them know before I fly!

Have a good holiday !

I would take euros. Although this is risky I was in the Algarve in the summer and the handling charge on cashing euro travellers cheque was exorbitant in some banks.
