just so you don't think I'm unsociable, I work midnights and only work w/ 1 other person in the office most days of the week or alone.

We do a secret Santa at work and there are a few who don't get involved and that is their perogative. Just say 'no thanks, I don't wish to be involved. No one will take offence and if they do, then that is their problem, not yours.

I think you just answered your own question:)
Just tell them what you just told us:
You said:

"just so you don't think I'm unsociable, I work midnights and only work w/ 1 other person in the office most days of the week or alone."

To me... that is the most perfect way to politely decline. And to make it sound even more appropriate try the following:
"I am very sorry but I must politely decline, I do not want anyone to think I am unsociable but I work midnights and the only other person in the office most days of the week is just one person. Thankyou though very much for asking me"
and leave it at that:)

I know it can be difficult, you don't want to seem rude...

In the past I've just pulled the coordinator aside and said how much I would like to participate but that I just couldn't this year.

Your refusal tactic also depends on your reasoning.

Tell the person organising it that you don't want to participate.

There's no problem here - secret santa is entirely optional. It's a social thing, and like Christmas parties and staff gatherings, you can decline the invitation.

no thank you.

anyone who keeps on, or further asks for more information is rude. so be short. " i wont be participating this year. "
