where friendship with opposite gender is prohibited

Openly and honestly, but keep in mind that you are responsible for the expression of your emotion and you are not responsible for the emotions of your family members.

Opposite gender, same gender... it makes no difference. The best you can do is to be yourself and express who you are and how you feel. This is true toward members of your family as well as toward friends.

Often family tries to exert control over that which they should not have control. Your feelings is one of these areas. Remember the lessons from Romeo and Juliet. Their families did not approve. The results were tragic.

Do not believe that talking with your family will make any difference in how they feel or how they will act toward you and your feelings. Some families are more open and flexible than others are. On the other hand, do not lie or cheat or sneak about. If you are going to get into trouble anyway then do what you need to do.

But keep in mind that you will not live with your family forever. Perhaps there is also a time to wait.

This would depend greatly on the reason why it is prohibited. My first instinct would be religion of an extreme measure, second would be cultural origin most likely Asian. In either case I would first seek advise from someone with experience in that particular environment. Also if this is an old custom interfering with a new world situation you could also test the boundaries by presenting situations that require you to interact with people of the opposite sex, explaining that it is necessary for your development in society or school or whatever you feel will work best. Down fall with that is that it merely allows freedom rather than acceptance, which in the long run is what you are actually looking for other wise you would have figured out ways around it. No matter what you need to understand WHY they have the restrictions, REALLY understand it not just the concept the reasoning.

PS there is a third reason that I did not list out and that is your family is messed up in the head. If this is the case (depending on age) get out ASAP. then seek counseling. Vik

Its your life and noone else can or should tell you how to live it!

If you want to be friends with some one of the opposite sex then just do it if your family are worth it they will support you because that's what a family is for!

By talking. It's your family and I'm sure that they have your best interests in mind. If you've got an elder sibling, confide in him/her. Get some support on your side. There's nothing that communcation can't solve. Just be clear in your head, don't feel guilty and look them in the eye. And ask them to have faith in you. After all you are their very flesh and blood!
