There are three general cloud types. Clouds are a combination and variations of the three general types. Some variations of the three general types are altocumulus and alto stratus.

There are three catagories.Low cloud,Medium cloud, and High cloud depending upon the cloud heights.Cloud height means the height of the base of the cloud.Stratus,Stratocumulus. cumulus and Cumulonimbus are low clouds.Altostratus and Altocumulus are medium clouds. Cirrus,Cirrostratus and cirrocumulus are High cloudsThus there are nine main type of clouds.
Cumulonimbus is the one that gives thunder and lightning extending upto a level of 15 kms in tropical countries.

They have been categorized by scientists. Sometimes I see cloud formations that defy a category. I call them "awesome" clouds. You know them when you see them. They usually appear at sunset after a major change in weather.
