I'm not sure for the reason why you are having difficulty sleeping. It can be from stress, or excess intake of caffeine, insomnia, and many more.
I have to say, try to stay clear from sleeping medications. Once you start, you may be dependent on them.
Here are some suggestions:
Try to relax yourself before bed. Maybe, take a warm bath. It tends to relax your muscles and can be soothing to the body.
Try to do a light form of meditation.
Read a book in bed. That always does the trick for me.
Warm milk.
No caffeine drinks or pills.
Try not to eat a heavy meal before bedtime
Eat a handful of cherries. Cherries have melatonin that helps regulate your sleep cycles.
Give these a try, and hope all goes well.
Sweet dreams.

Don't listen to those who say to get sleeping pills. I've had bad insomnia ever since I went off to college and had a roommate. My doctor prescribed me sleeping pills. That was 4 years ago, and I can't stop taking them now. Not that I'm dependent now because they feel nice (albeit they do--e.g. ambien and temazepam) but because I tricked my body into learning that I can't fall asleep without medicine. What ever you do, don't try to cure your insomnia with sleeping pills. It's a long and hard battle that has more troubles down the road than those that are curable now. Try to make a routine and exhaust yourself with studies and physical activity during the day. Ease your mind of anxiety by taking on more tasks during the day to reduce tomorrow's workload and hopefully not let your mind race at night. Hope you have good luck. Insomnia is the worst.

I used to sleep only a few hours at night, because any little sound would wake me up, or if it was too cold, etc, etc, the list is endless.
Now I can sleep through anything, I mean it, I can be in the middle of the party and fall asleep. There are exercises for your mind that you can do.
I am not telling you that this will work for you, but they worked for me, it is a compilation or yoga, gnosticism, psychology, scientology and other stuff that I read through out my life.
First you have to program your brain to accept all the noises and be ok with them, don't try to block the noises from your head, that won't work, just be aware of them but don't pay attension to them.
You can also try to gradually increase the light in your room every night. Start with a tiny nightlight. You can also increase the noise with a radio.
Don't eat and go to bed. Give your body time to digest the food before you go to bed. You can drink something and go to bed but not food.
There are some techniques to control your body temperature.
If you are cold, lay down on your bed and relax completely, imagine that flame of fire comes out of your stomach and goes slow from your head down to your toes then goes back to your stomach. That will warm you up. And if you are cold just imagine is ice.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Well, the obvious, such as no caffine late in the evening, don't exercise right before bed. Try to relax, maybe a bath or read. Be sure to not nap during the day, and maybe exercise mid afternoon or in the am if possible. If you aren't sleeping because you are anxious, maybe see your doc or talk it out with a friend. If this persists, there are safe meds out there to help you. Lack of sleep can cause a host of medical and emotional problems, so I urge you to try some of the suggestions, and see a doc if they don't work. Good luck.

Drink warm milk right before you go to bed. Avoid caffeine. Grab the most ridiculously boring book (try Ulysees) and read with a faintly glowing lamp, while lying in bed. Make sure you use the bed only for sleep (or reading to get to sleep), b/c then, everytime you go to bed, your body will recognize the signs that it is time to sleep. Follow a cycle in which you go to bed at the same time every day, and wake up at the same time every day. This will alert your body to the time at which it needs to sleep. Don't take naps during the day.

Do you drink or do drugs often? That can make you not sleep. Are you constantly thinking of something? You need to release all your thoughts and ideas. I know I was suffering from insomnia really bad, but after I truly gave my life to God I started sleeping like a baby. I think for me it was just all the bad stuff in my life. I had a lot of things on my mind i needed to let go of. Jesus healed my mind. You would know it to be true if you knew me. lol

I know it sounds new-agey, but seriously try meditation. It has worked wonders for me. You don't have to switch religions or anything, just google some relaxation techniques and enjoy. In fact, try some methods for astral projection. Even if you don't believe in it AT ALL, it is a really good method of calming yourself down and passing out. All it is, is picturing yourself in some calm place. Try it with some lit insense or soothing music.
I honestly didn't believe it at first and was kinda embarassed by even trying it, but after long bouts of insomnia and bad reactions to medication, I got desperate. It very seriously works if you give it a shot.

get a comfortable bed first, throw all the nagging thoughts out of the window, try not to think abt anything, don't shift around in the bed many times, just stay where u are and try not to keep shifting around. Also close ur eyes before doing all this. don't let the weather in your bedroom be at any extreme, just keep it at any comfortable heat or cold..............and if all that doesn't work , then try the time tested way of counting the sheeps................sweet dreams
