I'm an older woman who claims that, and my third and youngest son is proof. lol.. he was almost exactly one month overdue and my doc finally 'induced' labor. it's a dang good thing cuz left up to my son he'd probably still be in there now, 22 years later. LOL
As odd as it seems to you, this really can happen. And the way a doc knows for sure the baby was that overdue is by looking at their weight, length, the length of their fingernails, vitals, amount of hair, etc. There are a lot of ways they can tell.
Plus the fact that my youngest has been continually late for everything thruout his life.
If nothing else, it's a great reason to try and 'guilt-trip' him.. ;) Countless times I've said, "I carried you for 30 extra days, you owe me!" (Course he just laffs at me when I say that... LOL)

I know what you mean...my mom claims that I was a month overdue...I highly doubt that! I don't think they knew that 40 weeks is actually 10 months total. I can't talk to her about it though...she died when I was younger, but my grandma always is like "No, you were a month overdue!" I try and explain it to her, but of course she thinks she's right! Oh well...
I'm currently pregnant, and I know how long it actually is!

Well I always thought women carried babies for 9 months. But after my 1st visit with my doctor I was told babies are carried 10 months. So when I was 9 mo. and 2 weeks my baby was born. All the doctors were saying he came "early" but to me he was 2 weeks late. My sister in law carried both her children for 10 mo. 3 weeks and 3 days.I could not have done it.

I'm in my twenties, and my mom was three weeks late having me. Back then c-sections and induced labour weren't as common as they are now. She was scheduled to be induced a week after I was born... I suppose there isn't really a huge problem associated with giving birth late, it depends on the development of the fetus. I was 7lbs 7ozs when I was born...so if they were to have induced near my due date, I would have been considerably less weight.

I totally understand what your talking about!
My mother goes on and on about how I was four weeks late!
I asked my doctor about that and she said that back in those days they didnt have all the tests that they have nowadays that accurately determine how far along you are. She also said that it could be that the woman wasn't really sure of her last menstral cycle or the date of ovulation/conception. Most people don't know the date of conception but they usually should be aware of the first day of their last menstral period. But I think in my mom's case, she didn't really pay attention to her monthly cycle or the days that her period started.
