I have owned 2 Canon ink jet printers. I mostly use them for b&w printing but I print a page of color about once every 2 weeks. After a year, they seem to start printing funny colors and lines on images that I seemingly cant correct thru head alignment, head cleaning etc. Do all jet printers eventually do this? Is it planned absolescence? Can I resurrect my printer to specs?

Depend! The best choice are HP5 series. They can work for a long time and they are very easy to refill.

This is Canon planned obsolescence. They started doing this a year or so ago. Printheads that have to be replaced twice a year at a cost of $65 or more each, ink cartridges that are so high you can't afford to print anything. I finally gave up on Canon, after having had Canon printers for 10 years. Bought an inexpensive HP desk jet, and have had no more problems.

I can't say I have had similar problems, but the cheaper printers do have a tendency to start having problems after about two years (from personal experience, they just stop working). I have found that if you buy a inkjet specifically designed for business use they tend to last a lot longer - over 5 years. You have to check how many pages per month they state they can handle. The more the better.

there are two different sorts of inkjet printers, the ones with a separate printhead where you insert the cartridges and the others where the printhead is directly integrated in the cartridge itself.
Canon printers are of the first sort and printheads are wearing out, because they become pretty hot during printing. as a thumb rule says, for proper printing you should change the printhead once a year.
The second sort of printers doesn't know that problem, because when you change the cartridge if it's empty then you change also the printhead at the same time.

No, printers should not meet failure after a year. If printer alignment and cleaning the nozzles does not correct the problem, you should have them serviced where you purchased them. Sometimes a paper jam can cause ink to build up inside the printer where there should be no ink. This ink can drag across future pages, but it should dry shortly thereafter and stop.

I've worked with Canons, Epsons, HP's and even the clunky Lexmark I owned at home worked well for years. As long as they are properly maintained they should continue to work well for many more years to come.

I've owned 2 lexmark ink jet printers that lasted 8 years. i replaced them because the ink was too expensive and purchased an HP vivera all in one, copier scanner and printer.

It also works great, no problems and ink is only $14.

Drop the Canon and go HP!

If your printer has warranty get it to repair for free but if it has not you must change the damaged jet inks .
it is better to buy a new HP .
compare the prices .

Don't know about yours, but my HP Deskjet 500C (their first color PC printer) is still working fine.
