500Watt use to be the gaming standard, but now with all the new fans and dual-this-&-that, I've seen 600Watt power supplies showing up. They have LED lights with colors and I've seen both intake and output fans. The power supply has to be compatible w/the motherboard. Check out the connections. Newer power supples have the 24-pin (ATX 2.0). PCI express video cards want an extra cable on the new power supplies too. I know it's annoying.

I wouldn't sink any more money into your old rid yet. DirectX10 is coming out w/Vista, and Microsoft promised new games. Vista is a total memory hog (so was 2000, so was 98, so was 95, etc.), so all the hardware is going to get much faster. Possibly good news if you still don't want to wait...I can predict some killer sales. Everything we are looking at is junk. 64-bit bus, here we come. (Now if we could get some good functionality with those graphics...hmn.)

Yes you will need a new power supply. But as to the the other three questions, you didn't say what computer.

Most use a standard ATX power supply unless you have some small form factor computer or an older Dell. PC Power & Cooling has a chart with instructions.

Ohldonno was correct -- hold off unless you cant take it anymore w/ your current setup.

What is just as important as the Wattage is the brand/quality of the PSU (power supply) -- many generic crappy PSU manufacturers give innacurate ratings and they suck horribly and will fail under load. Get an Antec -- they are cheap and really stable. The best on the planet are PC Power & Cooling -- but of course you'll need to break out your checkbook.

Is your motherboard PCI Express ?? it has to be to run the 7900 hardware, and I doubt any manufacturers are putting 300W PSU w/ newer sytems using PCI Express....
make sure

I just put a 7900gs in a comp with a 300watt PS but it's a great PS. So, no you should not try it.

became into it a custom geared up laptop? if sure, then you incredibly could be waiting to do it and not using a concern. purely make specific its skill connector is 20+4 pin, in the experience that your modern-day motherboard basically help 20 pins somewhat of 24. that way you ought to use the 20 out of 20+4. a brilliant number of the modern-day kind geared up circumstances help atx psu's too.

No, you do not have to get a new power supply just to make a new graphics card work, however, if you anything additional (Harddrive, external devices, pci cards...etc) you'll want a higher power supply range. Goodluck...
