So many things in the book just didn't ring true to me - like Mountain Goat getting beat up day after day, once beaten until the kids ran out of steam, but her parents didn't even notice? Or her dad setting fire to the Christmas Tree...

Opinions? Facts?
Just curious - the book is great if it's a true story, but if it's fiction, it's nothing.

Frankly I have not had the occasion to read the book. Going by the review in the following site, I guess it must be an interesting http://www.advicediva.com/ad/bookclub/theglasscastlereview.asp. Many appear to have deeply disturbed by the facts from the book, as you have expressed.

I agree, which is why I looked up this question. There are too many bizarre things, in mass quantities, page after page, that just don't make sense or add up. When the kids had a "shoot out" with a neighborhood boy, and no police came or followed up - ridiculous. The living conditions in WVa - the "open garbage hole". That would surely bring out the social agencies in the "real" world, such as children's services. The obvious abuse, neglect, lack of food, starvation of the children in the schools. This would be attended to immediately in any school district in America. .The kids searching through the garbage cans in school for food. This would easily be discovered and attended to in reality. Gripping story to read, but it should definitely be classified as fiction.
