Eating seafood is FINE during pregnancy.
Mercury is bad, yes, but if you avoid eating the same kinds of fish over and over, the high levels of mercury won't affect anything. For example, canned tuna is considered high in mercury. Eating tuna every day might be a bad idea. Eating tuna once every few months, spread out among other fish, would not be.
Do you really think Japanese women STOP eating fish and other seafood during pregnancy? That's their main source of protein! Any doctor who would recommend that is not one I would trust to be logical and impartial.
Women also continue eating fish and seafood in my area (EXTREME south Louisiana) and here seafood is probably around 1/4 of our total protein intake. That would still be ludicrous to expect a woman to give up! Most seafood here is caught fresh from the Gulf of Mexico. And our babies are born FINE. Maybe it's because we don't consider canned tuna "fish", and when women in other areas say they're eating "fish", that's what they mean. In my opinion canned tuna is more like watered-down mush.
So don't worry about fish, per se. Throw out your canned tuna, and pick up some frozen salmon, tilapia, flounder, etc at the grocery store. Yes, I say FROZEN because even the so-called "fresh" fish is not something I would eat. That is coming from a woman who eats truly fresh fish at least every other day. I can't see how they are allowed to call that "fresh". If you are close to the water and have a real fish market in your area, of course buy fresh there.

Too much mercury is bad for you. So too much of some seafood is bad for you during pregnancy. My doctor told me not to eat more than one can of albacore tuna a week. And to stay away from swordfish, shark and a few others that I can't think of right now. Basicly just stay away from seafood thats high in mercury.

Certain types of seafood do need to be avoided during pregnancy due to the mercury content in some of the products.
Here's a list of the foods to avoid during your pregnancy
- unpasteurised milks (can cause Listeria)
- soft, ripened cheeses such as brie, camembert, and similar blue veined varieties (also because of the unpasteurised milk used to make these cheeses, it can cause Listeria)
- ice-cream from soft whip machines (wrapped or block ice-cream is fine)
- patés — all types
- raw and undercooked eggs (thoroughly cook eggs until both the white and yolk are solid)
- liver and liver products
- mayonnaise (homemade)
- shark, marlin and swordfish should be avoided and tuna restricted to two medium cans or one fresh steak per week. This follows concerns about mercury in these fish and also applies to women who are breastfeeding or intending to become pregnant.
