as merntioned, DIY is the way to go, you get more bang for your buck and dont have to deal with all of the crap software the manufacturers install. Whatever you do DO NOT BUY COMPCRAP, HP, or an emachine -- they are piles of festering dog feces...all of them. Dell makes a decent desktop probably the best of the large manufacturers. If you had a large budget I'd Recommend Falcon NorthWest, or VooDooPC, but @ $2000 you can build a great system...Think about Vista, and dont put more than 2 Gigs of RAM if youre gonna use XP, anything more than that XP will occasionally freak-out.
You can buy an super fast Conroe chip (Core 2 Duo), 2 Gigs of quality RAM (crucial, corsair, kingston, mushkin, OCZ) a good PSU (500W or more) a large HDD, and a couple of optical drives...then spend about $300 - $500 on the video card if youre gonna game...and dont buy an ATi vid card, they are kinda sucking lately... get nVidia...you'll have a bad-a$$ system. Goto Nrewegg.com to get prices

I only offered one at Walmart for $429. It has a three.6 ghz Pentium 4 processor, 512 mb of memory, 100 and sixty gb troublesome stress, twin layer DVD burner, keyboard, scroll mouse. It has Vista and could not enable me to apply alot of previous classes or change to residing house windows Me or older OS because the drivers for the sound, video, motherboard gained't help older OSs. That section sucks. that is a great deal. you could get a very good flat panel visual show unit for lower than $2 hundred at Walmart too. do not spend $2000 except you truly favor to. if you're a severe gamer you could continuously get yet another memory stick and a more advantageous suited video card for it.

Well, If you are going to spend $2000, you can buy your own parts. and it would be top of the line. with $2000, you could get over 500 GB HDD, graphics cards equilvilant to those of of the newest Gaming Consoles, 4 Gigs of RAM, a Dual Core Processors. and you'll still have around $500 left. They best place to get your parts are Newegg.com. But if you just want to buy a computer, I recommend top of the line Sony, or Dell XPS.

Believe it or not, Walmart has some pretty good computers for a great price. I would go and check them out. I have a friend that is a web developer and he is very happy with the one he bought for home use...you may have to upgrade a bit but you could afford to with the price.
