What kind of bot? There's few different kind of bots:

1 - Messenger bot like SmarterChild found on MSN, ICQ, and AIM.
2 - Chat bot like Trivia/Operator bot found in IRC and chat room.
3 - Gamer bot to help you win and/or few other stuff.

A: for what? there are bots for hundreds of things

B: Bots are against almost every TOS that I can think of, and many sites/games scan for them and ban you.
