Servers-necessary for the internet-were first developed by Cisco in what year? Can't have the internet without servers, right?
Also, at what university were the computers hooked together before there was an internet?

Well, let's see. My first PC was a 486DX33, I believe the year was about 1993? Anyway, I had the Internet by AOL. I was running a 9800 baud modem and was paying $10 a month for 5 hours of access. There were web pages but not many, mostly AOL was a news service and chat program. I assume this was about the time Gore "invented" the Internet.

The Internet was originally developed for the use of military personnel. Though, in my opinion the Internet we know and love really blossomed after the dot com bust. With the advent of what some of us like to call Web 1.0 and most recently Web 2.0 we now have social networking and unprecedented levels of Internet based services. Think Youtube, Flickr, del.icio.us even Yahoo Answers is a product of Web 2.0. The Internet we know now is not merely connected, we now have the ability to reach out and touch anyone in the world in ways never before seen.

The first ARPANET link was established on October 29, 1969,

as far as the world wide web (http/html), It's creator, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web by Christmas 1990.
