They are the same size since the last expansion, both have 16 teams and they make the NFL at 32 teams. They are the American Football Confrence and the National Football Confrence. This comes from the old merger where the American Football League and National Football League merged to become the new NFL and the AFL became the AFC and NFL became NFC, with three NFC teams moving to the AFC to even it out. Of course there were other expansions through the years but that isn't important to the question.
