Pyrosoma is a marine tunicate.It is colonial and phosphorescent.
The colony is compact and tubular. The body of the animal(zooid) is cask shaped.The oral and atrial apertures are at opposite ends.There are buccal and atrial sphincter muscles.There are a few delicate muscles in the body wall(tunic).The pharynx is well developed.It has a large number of lateral gill slits.The stigmata are quadrangular. The dorsal part of the pharynx has dorsal lamina and the ventral part has glandular endostyle.the intestine is curved. Pyloric gland ramifies in the intestine.The anus opens into the posterior part of the atrial cavity.The heart is placed behind, at the end of the endostyle. Gonad are placed ventrally behind the intestine.
The viscera lie behind the pharynx.The nerve ganglion lies dorsally at the anterior end.On the ventral side of the ganglion lies the phosphorescent organ.Stolon lies ventrally and posteriorly.
