I think 500 is damn cheap, after living in California for 30 years, I would guess at least 1,000.

Studios go for $700 and up, not as many as one bedrooms which start at about $800, cheaper to share a 2 bedroom, about $1,000. Prices vary by area, have SDSU students in my building in Hillcrest/ Balboa Park, a better area, in my opinion than the college area, rent here, 1 bedroom, $900, 2 bedroom from $1300. Rent would be much less in say, the 'hood.
