I believe that the best charities start locally. There are always many in our local areas who need help or assistance during the holiday season. Even local department stores sometimes have places where anonymous buyers can purchase items for families who have young children who may need clothing or a few toys. Check with the service desk at local department stores in your mall or call the local newspaper about purchasing for local families. I think this is sometimes a kinder gesture than giving to larger charities who wind up taking a percentage out of the donations to keep for their advertising and funds.

The Salvation Army: We donate money and go to a warehouse where put together bags of toys for family with children who cannot afford toys.
Samaritans Purse: Each member of my family purchases something out of a special catalog, the items are shipped to people in remote parts of the world who cannot attain the items. Last year me and my brother bought milk for a child for a whole year. My other brother bought baby chicks for a family so they could have eggs and meat. And my parents bought a family 2 goats, which gives a family milk.
Operation Christmas Child: Each year my chruch collects shoe boxes filled with hygiene items, shcool supplies, books, candy, toys, shoes, and clothes. We wrap the boxes and then ship them to a proccesing plant which then ships the boxes to remote parts of the world where children would be able to get the items. My family alone made 15 boxes. We collected 300 boxes from a small church of 75-80! Overall we collected more than 400 boxes!

I can't donate money or anything at this point in time. If I could donate at Christmas or well any time of year it would be to Riley childrens hospital.
I am 20 and I am a single mother of 2 kids. I have a daughter that was just born Aug. 11th of this year she was under 2lbs when she was born and she spent months there and I was and still am receving help trying to get back on my feet after having to quit my job so I could be by my baby girls side when she was in there.

I never really have donated to charities..I always give a dollar to any store I am in for what ever cause they are collecting for at the time.
My way of contributing to society is to help everyone I can whether it be a ride to someone who doesn't have a car, or to give my kids clothes to someone I know or a friends family member.
I also volunteer at my children's school throughout the year doing whatever the school needs.
Just tonight my daughter and I went with our girl scout troop to a nursing home to help the residents play bingo and give cookies and some social interaction..
I have had and seen some bad experiences with charities like the Salvation army.
I worked there for a-while and if people really knew what they did with a-lot of their clothes and misc. items they would probably think twice about donating.. Did you know they take the clothes they don't sell within a month and sell them to 3rd world country's for .3cents a pound instead of giving to the needy and homeless in our local city..That is why people give this stuff to these charities so people in their own community benefit from it..Some of these people are so poor they can't even afford the prices in the Salvation Army!
I guess I am just one of those people who want to see where my money/clothes/time go to!
I help anyone who needs help but I can't see handing stuff over to people that say one thing and then do another!
If you want to donate go out buy something and find a homeless person to give it to or go donate your time somewhere that way you know without a doubt that things are happening they way you want them to!
Merry Christmas!

Oh, the Salvation Army without a doubt!
First in!
Last out!
I've had the delightful experience of participating in several "disasters".
I watched FEMA drive by.
The power companies drive by.
The Christian Broadcast Network Disaster van drive by.
ALL of the insurance companies drive by...fast too.
I've even seen the beloved Red Cross drive by.
But...but the Salvation Army drove right to us....every-single-time!
"Ya'll okay?"
"Anyone injured? We'll get you to a medic."
"Ya'll hungry? We got hot food!"
"Ya'll got clean water? We got plenty of water!"
"Anybody diabetic? We can get your drugs on ice for you and bring it back when you need it!"
"Anybody need baby formula or diapers?"
"We'll drive around at night time and make sure everyone is still okay."
And they did too.
And when everybody else went home....the Salvation Army...stayed.
If you happen to see a bell ringer outside the Walmart and they have no gloves, go in a buy 'em a pair!
The Salvation Army will employee Homeless & Sheltered women during the holidays.
And let's not forget all the hundreds of thousands of the down trodden people they feed and cloth everyday.
They will get every penny I can spare and I sure never have to worry about how much more money THEIR executives are making than I am.
God love the Salvation Army!
Oh, by the way, the Salvation Army is a BRITISH ORGANIZATION, 101 Queen Victoria Street, London, England.
So, that makes us in the US just SOME of the FOREIGNERS they help on the INTERNATIONAL level.

salvation army and toys for tots. i have 2 little kids who always get the gimmies this time of year. so any time we go to a store with a bell ringer in front. i give them each a dollar to put in the bucket. it adds up to about $100 each year. and when the marines do the toy drive i let my kids each pick out a toy to donate. i know its not much, but at least its something we dont have a whole lot ourselves. but hopefully im teaching my kids that there are people much worse off then us, and it keeps them from getting too greedy during the holidays.
