I have been a webmaster since 1993 and I do a lot of SEO work for my clients. I like to compare it to a game of chess. You can teach anyone how the pieces move but it's hard to teach them strategy. You could read all the books in the world and still not be able to win a single game. I don't know of a true SEO that would teach anyone what they fully know about what we do. Those that say anything really don't know much. If you want to become a SEO, build a site and get it to the top. Then do it again for friends, then after you have did it more than 50 times, start selling to your own client. Don't try and get a job with a company.
Do a Yahoo Search for "SC Webmaster" or "South Carolina Webmaster" That's me... :^) Good Luck!

You need to try doing it for yourself before you think of it for a career. Most people with web pages learn how to do it on their own. Go to webmasterworld.com for help. It can make you tear your hair out. I only do it for my own pages. I sure wouldn't want that stress on a daily job doing it for others!!! Man I cannot imagine a more stressful job!
You do know the search engines constantly change their algorithms so you have to constantly be trying to figure out what they are doing this week. And they are all different.
I have had hundreds of web pages and used various software programs for SEO but to do it as a career? You would quickly go insane.

I would suggest that you choose something more programming oriented, and add this as like a minor. SEO is nothing without the ability to write the site you are optimizing.
Dont get me wrong, it is a big field, but youll need to understand HTML, javascript, CSS and dynamic pages to be any good at it anyway.
It is a constant battle. Things are changing all the time.

Hi friend,
Me too had came accross this question once in the past and now i have made it my profession and am working in a company as Seo.
It depends on knowledge of Seo you have and the desire in you too.
Seo is not a book which you can read and became the master ... but you can learn about it in forums such as warriorforum , highranking forum where people in this seo line discuss about SEO topic.
So if you want any more suggestions then feel free to ask me if you are interested.

SEO is that easy to do well. It takes many years of experience to do it well. If you are not already involved in it, I wouldn't gert into it. There are so many companies already doing it.
