Outliers will skew the data set (including mean and median) fairly drastically. For example if there are 20 students in the class and the average of 18 of the students is a 50, but 2 students got 100, then both median and mean will be increased disproportionately.

I am going to answer this question by using an example. Consider a number set .. 5, 7, 9, 11, 13. Mean means average or (x1+x2+....+xn), n being 5 in this case. The mean is 9. Median is the middle number in a set, in this case it also happens to be 9. Now if we added some numbers we considered "outliers" and changed our set to 1, 7, 9, 11, 20. The mean is now 9.6 but the median remains the same. Outliers can effect the mean but has no effect on the median. As a second example consider the set ... 10, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22 ,, n = 6 the mean is 17.666 ... The median is (18+19)/2 = 18.5. Now consider 2, 16, 18, 19, 21, 39 mean = 19.1 the median is still 18.5, it does not change.

Do you know what an outlier is? It's a number far away from others.

Do you know what a mean is? It's just the average.

Do you know what a median is? It's the number half way between the lowest and highest.

So, an outlier will only slightly change the mean, but will significantly alter the median.

Think about it, because I'm sure it will be on the final.

Every observation has an effect but the outliers have a unduly strong effect. It's a poor idea to allow any one observation to have too great an effect on your model.
