a doctorate won't be enough without the benefit of a little nepotism to land a job at McDonald's in the future

Good question, this is the Billion Dollar question- what will the future hold, I say get as much education as possible. No doubt it will serve you well, being well-rounded is excellent. Lets face the facts, McDonalds is not hiring high school grads-they hire imigrants for the most part. Most high school grades go to home depot type jobs and start at $10.00 an hour, if someone receives a college degree they can expect at least $50-70.k to start- higher degree's like Pharmacist can expect to receive $100k to start.
Lets be a little more realistic about the future, you will see a move toward the rich and poor the middle class is being pushed aside. As real estate prices increase, inflation, and americas debt increases I would suggest either getting a advanced degree, or just go into the service industry. Most folks aged under 35 do very little for themselves, they don't clean the house, car, cut the lawn, clean the pool, wash clothes, or fix anything- lots of opportunities. Good Luck, and do what you luv- making money is a bi-product of being passionate about your career.

I know people making good money with no college and people with college degrees working at BestBuy. Everyone says they want you to have a degree but they also want experience and if you spend your time in college when are you gonna get any experience? I can't even tell you how many people I know with degrees that are not working in the fields they have degrees in. It's pretty much a waste of time between high school and the real world.

Pretty much. No matter how much experience you have in somthing, no matter how perfect a canidate you are, they will not hire you without a degree, and thats sad. College is not for everyone, but supporting your family is.
