There are many qualities and abilities that are needed to get a good job or have financial success. Working hard and keeping your nose clean are 2 of them.
Getting along with other people is a big asset. In many jobs it is important what kind of clothes you wear. Being assertive is always necessary. Education is a huge factor in success. Being articulate and being able to express yourself well is important.
Not giving up in pursuit of your goals is important. So is making adjustments in your plans when what you are doing isn't working.
Those people who say that hard work and keeping your nose clean are not important are making excuses for themselves because they don't have the other qualities that are necessary for success.

That's another way to say that if you dare complain or question you are a troublemaker, and if you are ever sick or fail to handle all the tasks you were given, you are lazy. Find an occupation you enjoy, find the balance between work and private life, do what you feel is right, the thing you can live with. I worked in a place that a client promised my manager she could get her daddy's friend (who was soon to become chairman of the county board of reps) to give them a lucrative contract, if only I'd go out with her, and they began harassing me to do so, so I quit, and I can't collect unemployment for that reason. Being male I would have difficulty suing. Although since then they hired this person to clean for them, a demonstratable bias there, and now hopefully she will drive them nuts everyday instead of me. I did work hard and kept my nose clean, I just didn't feel corporate gigilo was part of my job description. Now I'm an evil right winger up late on computer swilling coffee between odd jobs vowing all middle managers should be hung by their neckties.

It's a lie.
It is all about who you know not what you know. I dont meen brown nosing but just if you know people in higher places that helps a LOT more than just being good at what you do BUT that does not mean just slack off & hope to find someone higher. Still work hard as you can still make it just maybe not as fast as that person who knows the higher up people.

Work hard but do no believe in such a superstitious beliefs.
A Superstition is the irrational belief that future events are influenced by specific behaviors, without having a causal relationship.

Well, I think that how far you make it all depends on the people you know and how manipulative you can be.
You just need to know how to get what you want.
