I've wondered, while reading many students papers, the same thing. The term is called HYPERCORRECTION. As I remember from Linguistics classes, it is done by writers who don't know for sure whether to use an apostrophe or not. To compensate for the lack of attention paid in grammar or composition classes they put one in regardless of correctness.
I think it's from the philosophy...When in doubt...put it in."

We gotta take a stand on this...it's a terrible tragedy. English language is in the process of being flushed down the toilet in favor of either ignorants, or uneducated, or "txters", the new language that is causing fits in Freshman English 101.
ps: I suck at tele....just can't get the hang of it. Is that what your user name is about? My alpine habits just get in the way!

only an illiterate person would do so because that apostrophe stands for ownership in some way or another so if someone is using it elsewhere then they are incorrect
And i know what you mean things like that bug the crap out of me too

The thing is that the world never decided on that; people who napped in English classes didn't either -- they simply don't know, one way or another.
And, one might guess their instructors never bothered to corect them, or drive home the lesson correct usage.

Yes, I hate that too. They obviously haven't paid attention in grammar lessons.
And spelling! 'definate', 'sentance', 'alot' and 'dose' are four regulars on this site.
