*Sigh* Alas, English is a cruel language for children learning how to read and write. You usually have to memorize how words are spelled instead of going by how they sound. It's mainly because of the Great Vowel Shift (sourced) that happened to English, oh, and the fact that we borrow words from several difference languages. We tend to spell things how they were in the language of origin. So they don't follow our letter sounds, but another language's.

English can not have a 'complete overhaul' but can change gradually. However, I suggest you look up a man named Noah Webster, who is responsible for making American English and English English so different. Many languages have complex writing systems for no other reason than to be complex, and the speakers take pride in it. Chinese and Arabic are two other examples.

I'm not sure what your point is, but when I see illiterate writing, I don't think too much about what the person is trying to convey. If they can't be bothered to learn to spell correctly, how can I take them seriously?

Well, as English is a hodge-podge of many other languages it's unreasonable to expect it to be phonetic.
