No, you can put any mp3 music on it, but if it is form a cd, itunes will convert the file format for you so you can put it on. Or...if your question wasn't that, yes you have to use the program itunes to put music onto the ipod. I know someone who put ff7: advent children onto his ipod video so I guess the second two are yes too.

I heard they have horrible battery life with videos though

I have an Ipod 60 gig and I don't think it's worth the money. It freezes every time I play video on it and it skips songs randomly. It may just be a problem with mine, but a number of people I know have had problems with theirs. Decide if you want the video feature and check the other brands.

the iPod video is worth the money. you don't have to get the music off iTunes, but you do need to add them to your iTunes library to sync it to the iPod. you can put your downloaded movies but you have to convert the format so they will be compatible with the iPod. you can put DVDs on it but you need a DVD decrypter to copy the movie to you computer and then you need to convert the format also. it seems like a lot of work, but it's not.

bought for my son last year for Christmas "30GB" and he loves it
he has been saving money and buying his own movies in iTunes by himself with no help from me

Note: buy a case before you get the iPod machine itself. SCRATCHES EASILY!!! so make sure you buy one
