My doctor says he can't treat me because he is not a psychiatrist. He had been writing me out depression pills and xanax for 11 years and he decides today that he can no longer treat me. Do you think this is right?

only m.d.'s are allowed to prescribe medication. if he is only
a psychologist it is illegal for him to give out pills or prescribe.
he should be sued and arrested. and go to jail too.
then he can contemplate his psychological condition. lololol.
you mean you wish you were never born? so does everyone
else when the real physical pain comes. dying is a real drag.
because if we weren't born, we wouldn't have to die.
like in elementary school, kids would say, we did not ask
to be born. there is no automatic happiness. life is a lot
of suffering and trauma. working is no fun. fun is hard work
sometimes.

A doctor's duty is to his patient - and if he (or she) is limited in that capacity, telling the patient he or she can not treat the patient is his or her duty. They cant treat what they are not trained for.

A medical doctor has a certain amount of training in psychiatric medicine and works within that area. You or your sister (whoever it is with the problem) will have to see a psychiatrist for the problem, as it seems your medical doctor has reached his limits. He or she is not equipped to deal with a patient who has reached a potential suicide level.

There is no shame in seeing a psychiatrist. Lawyers, Policemen, governors.., even doctors see them, so go already. You (or your sister, whichever one it is) needs proper help and a medical doctor just is not going help at this point - the doctor obviously tried for 11 years.

Hope this info helps. And good luck. Be sure and thank the doctor for all the help he has given for such a long time. I bet he or she feels bad about this - but his decision is for your sister's wellbeing.

It may not be right but he may realize that you (your sister) is addicted to the medication; or he was audited by the ethics board and was questioned why he was treating you (your sister) for such a long period of time without sending you (your sister) to a psychiatrist. Depression pills and xanax are addictive and you (your sister) is going to have a hard time getting through this without the help of a psychiatrist.

Depression is a continuum until there is a learning of secrets. Doctors can't be your best friend. They can only maintain. Even the psych. doctors cant tell you there are mysteries to learn. You will have to develop skills to spy on your own group to find out why you are not fitting in. There is an insult unto death. It has to come from friends and family. Send me a message if you think I make sense to you. There really are some who care .

He should have referred you to a specialist a long time ago. I hope that this gets you to consult with someone who knows the latest drugs and is up on all the research. New things are coming out all the time -- I think there's something in this issue of Newsweek that's out now. Good luck - depression is tough, but you can make it out to the other side and feel much better by getting the right help.

most psych. hospitals have their own doctors that work for them and don't use outside doctors..maybe that's what he meant. Don't worry about that right now..If you are suicidal they HAVE to admit you it's a LAW. They will stabilize you and your case worker will find you a new psychiatrist and make the appt before you leave the hospital. It may not be one she wants but at least she'll have one.. Tell her if she's suicidal get admitted and then let the staff take care of the rest for her. She has enough going on without worrying about that.

Yes. Many doctors get to a point where they don't feel comfortable treating depression anymore because it's getting out of their field of expertise. Your doctor probably wants you to go see a psychiatrist now. For instance, a doctor can tell you you might need surgery, but he/she is going to send you to a surgeon to do the actual procedure.

Thank him! If he's out of his relm of experience he's doing the ethical thing. If your 'sister' has been on Xanex for 11 years she is most likely in need of medical detox (nasty and dangerous withdrawls). Also most states have laws that require doctors, therapists, etc. that dictate how to deal with someone who is dangerous to themselves or others. In my state we do what's called an EOD (Emergency Order of Detention) your locked up until you go for a mental health hearing. If the mental health professional does not protect the client they can be held legally responsable for any harm done.

Anti-depression drugs have caused people to feel more suicidal. That has been in the news for the last couple of years. Maybe he doesn't want to take the fall if somebody kills themselves.
