You can install the disk on any machine, it's compatible with anything after a 98 I believe and it doesn't recognize previous installations.

Nope. Sorry. You are only licensed for one installation. Further more, since your XP copy is an OEM version (it came with the pc) you couldn't legally load it on the emachine even if you first ran over the Dell with a steam roller. OEM versions are licensed only for the computer it came with. Now if being legal is not important, then ya you could install it on your emachine. You'd may need to wait at least 90 days since Windows XP was activated on the Dell. Most Microsoft software can be install on a second machine and then activated if it has been more than 90 days since it was activated on the first machine. Of course that would be wrong and might make old Bill Gates wait one more day before he can purchase the whole planet.

If it's a full installation CD, not a "Dell Windows XP Recovery CD" then you should be able to install it on your laptop. The CD might know that it's made as a Dell OEM copy and will refuse to install on your eMachines - I've ran into this problem before.

no.
the version that came with the dell is an OEM. it is good for the dell only. Youu can install it, but the computer will run for 30 days then no more. you will have to call microsoft and pay them for a new license to continue using it.

for everyone's info, the retail version, which comes with no PC, usually from a software retailer, can be installed on more than one computer legally, as long as it is deleted from the old machine. the OEM version, that comes with a PC like dell, is good ONLY for that computer. If the computer dies, the license dies with it. The OEM version is usually about 50 bucks cheaper for that reason.

I would say no. Usually when an os is bundled witha machine, it will only install on that brand of machine. In your case Dell paid for the licence and it is probably "branded" by Dell. When installed it will look for a Dell computor, if it can't find what it is looking for, an error will result.

I had an HP with xp, it would onlt install on that brand and model.

As I recall the license agreement for Windows XP allows one desktop and one notebook installation per purchased copy...

However, I do not know if that applies to OEM versions that one gets from a vendor such as Dell.

Also, you may get some funky behavior if you cannot acquire all the drivers for the laptop... not all vendors supported an upgrade.

You can install it, but it will be treated as an illegal copy, and your laptop won't get the Windows updates.

As far as I know DELL software work only on DELL products.

You can. Only illegal if you use it on both machines at once. At least that used to be the way it worked -- I see some are answering differently.
