Can I say Hannibal Lecter? I mean how often do you run across a serial killer who has principles? His level of insight into people was fascinating, and his world view was unparalleled, no? How about Milo from Catch-22 and Closing Time... sort of an anti-hero, right? It's hard not to like some one who can make the best out of a bad situation. Patrick Bateman is sort of an obvious choice too. He's just cool, I'm not going to explain myself. I suppose my favorite, if I had to pick one from the past hundred years, would be Frederick Clegg. "But what have I done?" (page 71) This guy doesn't even realize that he is a psycho. And his desires throughout the book seem almost noble. He's not in it strictly for sexual pleasure, in fact that's not it at all if we take his word for it, he just wants to "know" Miranda. She's his "guest" not his prisoner. At times the reader even feels pity for him with the way Miranda treats him. To me, Fred is the absolute epitome of the anti-hero. One can't clearly classify him a villain, but he certainly isn't a hero either. What an unusual situation Fowles puts us in. It's phenomenal really.
