Dodge Man is right. Without a certain amount of back pressure you will hurt you mileage more than you will help it.. If it was as simple to do as leave the muffler off to gain mileage they would have done it at the factory. A muffler is not part of the emissions system, It is a sound dampening device. By removing the muffler you won't notice much change in the sound of your Ford Powerstroke. The major sound difference is that you will hear a whistling sound at the outlet as the Turbo spools up. Do yourself a big favor...leave it alone . You could buy a Banks system that will give you two or three more Miles Per Gallon. Considering the cost of a Banks system you will have to own your truck for a long time to break even

you would do better to get an engineered aftermarket free flowing exhaust. If you cant afford the whole exhaust right now, ford had a problem with the first turn from the turbo manifold, it is a non mandrel bent tube that causes restrictions from the kinking during their bending process. replacing this down tube with a smooth mandrel bent downtube will help with the power and mileage. check out banks 6gun kit, adjustable computer controller for improved mileage, or higher power depending on the setting from 1 to 6

Since you have a diesel , the easiest thing you can do for better millage is to add a little oil to your fuel. about 2 oz per 20-25 gallons.
One reason this works is they have changed diesel to low sulfur and it is messing up a lot of engines.
Shhhh do not tell the man, or those EPA Peta people.

If you decrease the back pressure to much you can do damage to your motor but yes you can get better millage with straight exhaust just watch that you don't let cold air be pulled back into the super charger( long pipes).

i would go with a Banks exhaust system, rather than open or straight, all states have emission laws and for your truck it would be illegal to have straight exhaust
