I must admit I am surprised. He has had fluctuations and copped more criticism than he has deserved. He has been a solid bat for Australia in recent years, and been a great performer, particularly in our last world cup win.
I am guessing he figured it was time for a younger batsman to earn a spot in the team before next years world cup, and give some more stability, but I am surprised he didn't retire after one last home test next week in Perth.
Well played Marto - you had style, and will be missed.

Though it has come has a surprise, he retired with dignity and had a good career and thats what counts. He will be remembered for the times when he single handedly won matches for his team and also for his contribution in the Champions Trophy '06.

Since his performance in the Ashes series was not satisfactory, and he is over 35 years of age, he may have thought that he may
be dropped from Australian Team and as such decided to retire to avoid any humiliation of getting dropped.

I think he is a good example for our indian players those fail to recognize when it is time to call it quiets. When this classy player knew that he is not up to the task- set forth by others but mainly by himself he announced his retirement. It's always nice to know when the time is right than others showing us the doors.

It's about time somebody steps down or "retires" voluntarily.Give some else a go.Maybe Hayden should do the same, can't keep flogging a dead horse.

high time he did it , would have been worse had the australian committee not selected him for the 3rd ashes match , and in any case its better for us indians, he is a nice player of spin balling .
