That's my observation in Japan about the Japanese women (all age). Others may, of course, have different opinions. I wondered what would the Japanese men be doing all that time?

Someone rightly pointed out that people didn't understand the question. What I meant is that you don't see many Japanese men outside when you are in Japan. It's women all around.

If what Bugaisha's answer below is to be believed, Japanese men have marvellous capacity to work. They need no entertainment. They don't buy grocery. They don't even run shops. They only work in offices. Quite inspiring. And otherwise.

Daniel completely missed the point of your question which seemed to throw almost everyone else off. I will quote from the book "Shutting Out the Sun" (although I don't agree with Daniel, he might want to pick up this book):
"If you take a weekend stroll through Ebisu Garden Place, or any of a dozen other modern Tokyo shopping centers, you will see what anthropologists who label Japan's society "homosocial" really mean. You will find shops and cafes filled with smartly dressed women, eating Italian panini, sorting through Fendi scarves, or lining up for a matinee performance at the movie theater. But-unlike the scene in a typical American suburban shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon-you will see almost no men. Of the people visible, 90 percent will be women, with only a handful of couples. Rarer still would be a man and woman strolling together with their child.
Where is Dad? He is either at home sleeping, recovering from a stressful week at work and the after-work "drinking meetings" that are inseparable from his duties; or at the golf course, playing with his bosses or entertaining clients." (pg. 187, 188)
I just read this today, myself, and wasn't too surprised-I obeserved the same thing myself-though I didn't really 'notice' it. Thinking back, I really don't remember seeing older men. The only men I saw were those in 'business' clothes, who were younger anyway, and those, of the same age, with their girlfriends. Hope this helps!

People don't seem to understand your question ! The reason for this is that Japanese women travel more than the men. Men spend most of their time working. Many women don't work after they get married. But this is changing. Men often work 6 days a week...
LP, Japanese men love entertainment ! But they mainly do it after work with their co-workers. There's thousands of night clubs and bars in Japan. It's a common practice to go out drinking with your co-workers.

Yeah, you are right, during the day there are lots of females on the street in Japan, lots of old women and mums doing the shopping and friends out for a stroll, but were you only in Japan for 2 minutes? There are also alot of old men and business men too!
Morning = late uni students in a rush to school/late students in general, people on morning walks.
Noon = Male and female buisnesspeople out for lunch, school kids on breaks
Night = WAY more men than women, because they are all coming out of work and on their way home.
School kids coming home from bukatsu (after school activities) and uni students everywhere.
Although there are many women, there are a couple of million! men too.

Men are in the office in the daytime, and in the Izakaya (pub) in the night.
They have to bring their family to the outskirts or they are having a rest, slpeeping, at home on the weekend.
Oh I forgot... They love to play a golf. Young guys are doing Tokyo drift in somewhere outskirts of Tokyo.
People travel in the Golden week holidays, Obon time, and New Year holidays as a "exodus".

You want to say all the japanese men look like women? If you intend to express contempt by saying that, you will have to confront three enemies, japanese men, japanese women and the Women in general. The third group is the toughest.

Dude, step away from the bong! You aren't making any sense!
If I missed the point, it was only because it is inaccurate! I always see men walking on the streets! If I go into a coffee shop in the middle of the day there are both men & women there.
"I threw everyone else off?" haha...Damn, am I some kind of superhero with special powers?!
