the reason why i ask this is because my cousin had a baby girl and they are australian, she named her daughter montana dakota victoria, all of which are names of places. places that have no significance to her, she has never even been to these places.
i wondered if they named their kids these names for significant reasons, im not here bashing baby names.

Why do parents nam their children after long dead relatives...or Rivers(Shannon) or types of flowers (rose, lily, violet) Then of course there is IVY and DAWN,
It is because the parents like the word, the sound of it as a name. If parents didn't name their children after anything in the beginning NO ONE would have a name.

I like Montana, because you'd call her Tana and that's cute. Dakota is cute, too. I've heard Cody used as a nick name for this.

Sorry, but when I studied geography, Memphis, Daytona, Sydney, and Victoria weren't states. I don't think they added any since I graduated, either.

One reason is they like the sound of it. I remember the year we learned the states and capitals i wrote a story about a girl named Augusta Maine. I wanted my daughter to be named that.

Did anyone mention Helena (Montana)?

Some are also named after cities. There are Dallas, Austin, Nevada, Maine (Garth Brooks childs middle name, she was conceived in Maine), Carolina, Frisco, Diego, and there is an old movie where Elvis Presley was named Tulsa, for Tulsa Ok. They are interesting names and kinda different. some may have special meaning like Garths. I conceived my daughter in North Carolina and wanted to name her Carolina, but my husband wouldn't agree on it.

I'm from Nevada and I think Nevada is a pretty name. Maybe the place names have special meanings, although I must say I really dislike the name "Dakota".

Many of those states or cities were named after people in the first place, so I don't necessarily think that everyone is purposefully naming their children after geography. Georgia and Virginia are very common names and are states as well. I'm from Newfoundland and Labrador, don't think I'll name any of my kids after that. lol :)

The only names I like from the list are:

Dakata
Sydney
Victoria is actually a name of a girl and happens to be a name of the city.
and don't forget Brooklyn.

Maybe for the same reason people name their kids after relatives?
I personal love some of those names. My babies dad wanted to name our son Roman and our daughter Cherokee- but with the last name of NATION - I just couldn't do it.
