Methane is prepared by reacting sodium ethanoate with sodium hydroxide. It's called decarboxylation.

Ethene is prepared by the dehydration of ethanol using concentrated sulphuric acid at 180 degrees C.

Ethyne is made by reacting calcium carbide with water.
