You know, that is a really good question, and I am going to follow the answers! As a graduate student in Higher Ed Administration, I am anxious to find out what others think about the importance of higher ed.
To me, it is an invaluable tool, one that can only further our world society. That being said, I have found that the more I learn the more I realize I DON'T know! And perhaps, that is the point of education... Just a thought... But back to the question.
Education is a way to improve life - to serve and help others, to serve and help society, to serve and help the world. To me, it is not about what I can earn - it is important because I will be able to HELP.
I realize this sounds like an off the cuff response, but it really isn't. I have worked in the private sector for 25+ years, yet have not found anything that is as satisfying as helping a student get an education. Higher education is the preparation of our future. OK - I will admit that it is somewhat self-serving to feel good about helping people, but that is not the question... You asked how important it is to me - and my reply is...
It is ENORMOUSLY important!
=)

Well, considering this world is based on work and making a living/surviving, I would say general education is vital for a financially stable life.

For me, it's a satisfaction of taking my learning process to a whole new level. I continue to learn more about a specific area and also continue to learn from other classmates' experiences.
