I don't want the government protecting my best interest. In charging them with that they will surely screw it up. So to answer your question, no we can not trust our gov't to prtect our best interest. We can surely trust them to secure their own interests, that's for sure. I'm not even sure they protect our freedoms anymore. Look at all the states implementing smoking bans, NYC banning FDA approved foods, etc. America seems all about providing for the minority (not racial) at the expense of angering the majority.

The government is always trustworthy but some people elected to sensitive positions are corrupt and wanted to curtail freedom so that their interests will be achieved.
