What reasons can you guys think of for why animals should be killed for fur?

I'm thinking...for jobs. The people who kill them need their jobs and money to support their families.
And, the much-used, humans are the higher species/animals are below us excuse.

What other reasons are used to justify this practice?

well, if you are dying and need their fur to keep warm, that is about the best reason to kill an animal for its fur.

that is where fur started to be used for clothing. it was really warm.

now days, it is a symbol of luxury for people, so showy people like to wear fur products because it shows how wealthy they are (or want people to think they are).

not that killing animals is necessary to create warm clothing these days-- at least not in America. so, it has become pretty petty and cruel. it was ok when it was for survival.

yeah, im with the chic below-- i am not a big animal rights activist. i consider myself somewhat in the middle-- i don't condone hunting for sport & i think meat is an important part of the human diet (however, in moderation).

I differentiate between animals raised in captivity and those in the wild. Killing wild animals for fur can upset the ecosystem, allow disease to take hold, cause local extinctions, etc. The methods are usually very cruel and involve traps that grab and hold or which cause immediate crushing (Connibear traps), suffocation, or drowning (beaver trap sets). Animals raised for meat and fur are treated humanely, regulated closely, and are often much better than those trapped in the wild. Who would really want a scrawny little fox skin from the wild when a ranched fox is twice as big, has great clarity and depth of color, and wonderful texture? They live like kings and they are euthanized in the same manner as our pet dogs and cats. Today when I left the house it was 14F with a wind chill below zero. Synthetic hats just didn't cut it, so I wore a hat I made from a ranched fox fur. That white furry tail kept one ear warm, and the head are kept the other ear toasty. In extreme conditions it's hard to beat the real thing. But it should be a ranched animal, not a trapped wild animal.

Well nowadays there's no NEED- there are plenty of synthetic fibers that can be used. But keep in mind that animals are killed for many other purposes (like food) so if you've already got thousands of steaks and burgers going to market, should we not use the skin for leather or sweaters? But being killed exclusively for fur- that's another matter.

Unfortunately. it's all driven by supply & demand- people need to make a living. If someone lives in a poor country, there aren't jobs and can't survive by farming, fishing etc. but can feed their family by selling fur, drugs or whatever, that's what they will do.

There's no good reason to kill an animal for it's fur. The most justified there is is to use its fur to keep warm so you don't freeze to death. Barring that, it's completely unjustified. Sorry for my little rant, I'm not even with Peta or something.
