That's a good question, I am not sure. I do know that they are conditioned to the point as to when you feed them, fish always come to the front and surface of the tank to eat. They have to know that you are coming to feed them, it is a response, so they have to think to do it i suppose. And I have read somewhere that goldfish have an attention span of only 2 or 3 seconds. Not that the goldfish thing answers your question. A lot of big game fish like Muskellunge and Pike, Sharks etc. hunt and ambush other fish for food. They have to think to do this right? Can't be all instinct.

I think they do. I also think there are some fish which are smarter than others. For instance, my betta fish know when I'm going to feed them by looking outside their tanks. They're on my desk and usually very calm, but once I reach for their food, they're all excited at the front of the tank.
None of my other fish ever did that.
Another reason I think they have thoughts is because when they're dead, they look different, don't they? There's nothing going through their minds anymore, so they're just... lifeless. You can see it in their eyes.

I read somewhere (forget where it was) last week that fish can be trained to remember color & shape patterns in a matter of a few weeks.

As in a thought process? Well maybe they think horrible things about you when you reel them in with a hook in their mouths.
