Just an observation, don't want to sound narrow minded or anything amd I'm sure someone must have said this before. But...

There would be an average of 500,000,000 people in each star sign. Surely a horoscope can't apply to everyone?

Even if you do it for individual days of the year, there's still an average of 41.6 million people born on any given date.

And even then, I used to know someone born on the same day as me, in the same year. We went to school together and had similar upbringings. But he was nothing like me personality wise.

Isn't it all just a bit... well... irrelevant?

wow, when you look at it that way...

I know when folks get into the nitty gritty of astrology, the chart considers the time of day and the place of birth of the person...I think one blanket horoscope could be a little narrow for sure...like the ones in the newspaper...a real astrological chart based on all of the factors on the persons birthday may actually give a somewhat accurate forecast of the persons best path...(for real!)

Astrology, if you are inclined to believe in it, is not just about the sun sign, it is about all the planets and what sign they were in when you born, what time and place as well...that is why two people born on the same day and same year may be different from one another...

Believe what you want to believe, but it doesn't mean your right about anything your saying. None of it has to make sense for you to understand. Just because you and this guy had the same birthday and everything doesn't mean squat! The zodiac signs doesn't say that two people will be the exact same way. People born under the same sign share some of the same traits. Even if it's only one in particular. We all have our own unique personality. It sounds kind of crazy for you to say that he was nothing like you personality wise because he's not supposed to be anything like you personality wise. That's what makes all of us who we are as an individual no matter what sign we belong to.

some people believe in it. you have a point about the 6 billion but personal horoscopes include the time and place as well as date you were born. some just use it to take advantage of situations and dont let it rule their lives

But isn't it amazing how those 12 generalizations can be as accurate as they are - considering it is splitting "6 billion" people into 12 groups?

Some believers and disbelievers take astrology too seriously. But there is definitely something to it. The question is how could there be? I personally think Carl Jung was heading in the right direction.

No!! it all depends on the day you were born.. where the stars were lined up? where the planets are in each sign on each day etc.

Therefore, there can be 10 people born on a day but depending on the time and where the planets are at the time of birth and so many other factors - determines personality, outlook etc..

It's so complicated... you earthlings (apart from Russell Grant)just wouldn't understand!!

Its not that simple really ,to do it properly it has to be worked out from the year month hour and minute of your birth and the longitude and latitude of the place you where born .the position of all the planets are taken into consideration when doing your birth chart.so there are millions of different combinations

I had not thouht about it this way, but as others have said, they work it out more specifically to an individual by asking where and when you were born. I am very true to my sign, I have to say.

Astrology, we are told by Dr. Hancock, is a "pagan" superstition that flourished in ancient Babylonia, extended itself to Greece, and survived in Imperial Rome, but which died with the coming of Christianity. "With the Fall of the Roman Empire," says he, "astrology came to an end for about 500 years." It did, but it came to an end, not through any enlightenment from the Church, but by extermination. The astrologer had as much chance of living under the popes as a heretic or a "witch". Christianity had its own brands of magic to protect -- and astrology was taboo. Besides, astrology was too close to "pagan" beliefs and practices to be tolerated. The Church had prophecies and divinations of its own and would as soon permit a ''reading" of the stars as suffer a witch to live.
