PART OF THE UNION (John Ford / Richard Hudson) The Strawbs

Union Maid

There once was a union maid, she never was afraid
Of goons and ginks and company finks and the deputy sheriffs who made the raid.
She went to the union hall when a meeting it was called,
And when the Legion boys come 'round
She always stood her ground.

Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union,
I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union.
Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union,
I'm sticking to the union 'til the day I die.

This union maid was wise to the tricks of company spies,
She couldn't be fooled by a company stool, she'd always organize the guys.
She always got her way when she struck for better pay.
She'd show her card to the National Guard
And this is what she'd say

You gals who want to be free, just take a tip from me;
Get you a man who's a union man and join the ladies' auxiliary.
Married life ain't hard when you got a union card,
A union man has a happy life when he's got a union wife.

Not quite the same lyrics but Neil Young has a song called Union Man.

I'm proud to a union man
I make those meetings when I can, yeah
I pay my dues ahead of time
When the benefits come
I'm last in line, yeah.

I'm proud to be a union man.

Every fourth Friday at 10 am
There's a local meeting
of the A F of M, yeah!

This meeting will now come to order
Is there any new business?

Yeah, I think 'Live music are better'
Bumper stickers should be issued.

What was that?

'Live music is better' bumper stickers
Should be issued

The gentleman says
'Live music is better' bumper stickers
Should be issued
All in favor of what he said
Signify by sayin' "ay"

Ay!

If, however, you are opposed
Signify by saying "no".

I'm proud to be a union man

I don't know this song, but Woodie Guthrie wrote a song in 1960 called the Union Maid which sounds similar.

There once was a union maid,
She never was afraid,
Of goons and ginks, and company finks,
And the deputy sherrifs who
made the raids...

Part Of The Union

(G)Now, I'm a Union man, a(Amin)mazed at what I am,
I'll (C)say what I (G)think, that the (Amin)company (G)stinks,
Yes, (D)I'm a (C)Union (G)man.

Well, we meet in the local hall, I'll be voting with them all.
With a hell of a shout it's, "Out Brothers, Out".
And the rise of the factories, fall.

(G)Oh, you won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
You (D)won't get me, I'm (G)part of the Union,
You (G)won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
(C)'Til the (G)day I (Amin)die,
(C)'Til the (D)day I (G)die.

As a union man, I'm wise, to the lies of the company spies.
And I don't get fooled by the factory rules,
'Cause I always read between the lines.

And I always get my way, if I strike for higher pay.
When I show my card, at the Scotland Yard,
This is what I'll say.

Oh, you won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
You won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
You won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
'Til the day I die,
'Til the day I die.

Before the Unions did appear, my life wasn't half as clear.
Now I've got the power, for the working hour,
And every other day of the year.

So, though I'm a working man, I can ruin the government's plans.
I'm not too hard, but the sight of my card
Makes me some kind of Superman.

Oh, you won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
You won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
You won't get me, I'm part of the Union,
'Til the day I die,
'Til the day I die.
